Thank you for all of the birthday wishes. My birthday ended up having much more excitement than I had expected. I am over flowing with joy because Henry Lyons Charlton II and I share the same birthday! At first, I thought my friend was pulling my leg when she said that Baby C was on their way. But baby Henry arrived on the 16th, which I think is a good omen about the little guy. Not to mention that I am going to spoil the crap out of him on every birthday.
I haven’t been able to see baby Henry in person but am hoping to make a trip back to Philly very soon. How could I resist staying away from such a cutie?
My actual birthday was spent picking up a certain someone from the airport. He surprised me by flying home from his business trip early. While we were walking out of the terminal we came across an advertisement that just had to “GO ON YOUR BLOG!”
All I’m going to say is that I’ve seen these posters in both Union Station and now at Reagan National Airport. Interesting marketing, don’t you think? I can’t help but think this might be about the farm bill which is up for renewal… more on that at another time.
My birthday dinner had to be postponed one night, but it was worth the wait.
Pasta + white wine cream sauce + bay scallops + sungold tomatoes, english peas, asparagus, red pepper and flat leaf parsley.
I’m really starting to like Arlington. A lot. I might even *gasp* love it. I love the Whole Foods here that is for sure. There are FOUR hot bars! And wine and beer!! Now all they need is Kombucha, the good kind preferably (aka Synergy). Running in Arlington is interesting. It is VERY hilly… the worst part is that the uphill section is on my way home from the trails. I will either have killer legs in a few weeks or will end up taking the metro home. The area still feels a little bit yuppie to me. It’s just different from being in hipster city.
In spite of my rambles above, I wanted to turn your attention to today, which is World Humanitarian Day. I really encourage you to watch the full YouTube video. I believe that humanitarians come in all shapes and sizes. It may be those providing health care in war torn areas, or taking food to areas hit by a natural disaster. But I also believe in local humanitarians, who help clean up neighborhoods, build houses with Habitat, or donate food to their local food bank. Have you ever thought about becoming a local humanitarian? What sort of problems face your area? What can you do to improve someones’ life? I’ve talked extensively about my time with Philabundance, which was an experience that was incredibly rewarding and something that I truly miss.

Yay I’m glad you love A-town! Let’s plan a meet-up soon
That dinner sounds great. It’s making me feel not so hot about what I have in my fridge. So glad you’re loving the area. We’ll have to meet up soon.
How cute are you?! Such a “corny” fabulous pic:)
I wish I had more time to give back to the community, I really do.
happy belated birthday! That little guy is so cute, anyone would spoil him. I think MeYou Health was alright, I probably will continue just because I’d feel bad to stop. But it wasn’t all I was expecting, though some of the challenges were pretty cool in the way they made me think about things differently.
ditto liz–glad you’re starting to dig arlington! it’s a great area to live in
where in a-town are you? and, you’re right, it’s SO hilly. all of nova is–you don’t realize it until you start running it. i will say though, it’s great prep for races and stuff–and when i travel and run flat it makes me feel that much more powerful
. i saw a commercial for that campaign last night *right* after i read your post.
as for school…have fun, be as much of a nerd as you want and enjoy making new friends! i am super close with two women i met on my first day of grad school and i always remember the first day of school for those things: being excited, feeling happy in my nerd-dom, and my buddies
and i’m here if you have any questions! or just want a buddy who went through it!
and since i’m writing a book–happy belated birthday
Henry is the cutest baby!! Congrats to your friends!
I’m doing my best to help out the best I can in Cleveland. Right now Team Challenge is the biggest stride I have taken to help others!
Henry is an adorable baby!
I loved living in Arlington as well, but totally agree that it is very yuppie!! I used to shop at the Whole Foods in Clarendon and enjoyed eating/studying upstairs. Btw, I’m moving to DC for the fall, so we definitely need to arrange a meet-up!
Happy belated birthday! What an honor to share it with such a cutie
Interesting marketing, indeed!!
Also, I’m glad you’re on the verge of loving it there
And glad you got to celebrate your bday with a surprise earlier visit!!! xx
Happy belated bday!
I was JUST at the Whole Foods in Arlington! I pass by there everytime I drive back to school
Happy belated birthday! Henry is so adorable!
Welcome to the world baby Henry!! He is so cute!
Hope you get to go back and see him soon.
Glad you had a great birthday AND glad to hear that you’re starting to really like Arlington. I hope as the time goes by you’ll just keep loving the city even more!
I’ve also been seeing more corn industry advertisements lately. Interesting…
Well, family farmers are pretty much incapable of earning enough to have a family if they aren’t growing produce that’s heavily subsidized. They don’t have much of a choice now do they.
…and they can’t even select their own seeds.
Bullshit advertising.
