Tomorrow (May 27th) is “Don’t Fry Day,” a day devoted to skin safety and sun protection. Remember last years post about sun safety? Well, sun protection deserves to be talked about again.
Over the past year I’ve noticed more moles popping up on my skin. Part of this is the natural aging process, but I know part of it is also from bad habits I had in high school and college. Sun is damaging to skin, we should all know that by now, causing both skin cancer and wrinkles. Trust me when I say that neither are very pretty. UV radiation is the direct cause of 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers. There is really no excuse not to use sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends both adults and children use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and it is important to look for sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
I’ll be honest in saying that I love just sitting outside in the sun, feeling the warm rays makes me incredibly happy. But I don’t love the new moles across my shoulders and arms. Here is a great link through Self on what suspicious moles look like. I really encourage you all to take a look at them and to think about your sun practices.
Adding sunscreen into your daily routine is simple. Look for a moisturizer that contains an a low level of SPF. I put SPF 15 on my face every day. Even in the winter. If you know your going to be outside but dont want to feel greasy look for some of the new spray formulas. Target’s Up&Up was rated one of the best for 2011 and it wont break the bank like name brands. A quick spray before you leave will help keep you protected throughout the day and wont rub off on clothes. Also remember to put on chapstick with SPF because burnt lips are not fun.
No one wants skin cancer, it’s not pretty, requires surgery and will leave scar. Luckily, it’s also preventable. Be smart this summer and keep your skin safe.
